The 1834 Hunting Stewart

£165.00

Discussing the Hunting Stewart tartan in 1886 in his book ‘The Tartans of the Clans of Scotland’, James Grant said:

"Although we have failed to trace the history of this tartan, or fix the date of its introduction, as it has long been a favourite with the people of Scotland…one of the most beautiful tartans associated with the Royal Stewarts".

With that in mind, NIXEY is proud to add the Hunting Stewart to its Heritage collection. Combined with our Chesterfield brown leather & antique bronze fittings, this is a bag made for the outdoors, inspired by Scotland’s glorious rugged landscape.

Handmade near the Highlands, the 1834 Hunting Stewart unites the skill of two Scottish artisan workshops.  The tartan is woven from natural wool fibres by a century-old, family company.  Passed on to a traditional sporran makers workshop, the fabric is then handcrafted with brown leather to create each bag.

NIXEY's 1834 Collection takes inspiration from the sporran accessory, native of Scotland. Each 1834 has an adjustable strap so it can be worn as a long or short shoulder bag & as a beltbag. Designed with an expanding leather inner, the bag is compact yet deceivingly spacious.

Borne out of necessity in the 12th century, Highland warriors were the first to wear the leather sporran, over a kilt - a single piece of tartan cloth requiring no tailoring, and therefore no pockets. This modern reinterpretation by NIXEY stays true to the original design essence, yet adds an element of surprise as each 1834 seamlessly interchanges from shoulder bag to waist bag, reflecting the versatility of contemporary life. The 1834 gives you the freedom to wear your own way!
